ALBUQUERQUE — Poker-faced Gary Harrison may just turn out to be Fred Snowden's ace in the hole.

The New Mexico Lobos found out that University of Arizona coach Snowden wasn't bluffing in saying that Harrison was his best bet to be the playmaker for his Western Athletic Conference defending basketball champions.

UA and UNM opened league play last night in a thriller before more than 17,000 fans at University Arena as the Cats held off numerous Lobos charges from far behind to win, 89-87. Most observers agreed that Harrison's steady play was the difference in the game.

Bob Elliott of the University of Arizona pulls down one of his 12 rebounds as New Mexico's Jimmy Allen watches. The Wildcats opened Western Athletic Conference play with an 89-87 win over the Lobos in Albuquerque last night.
