Soph Nets 19 In Upset Of Bulldogs

Arizona’s Wildcats, short on veterans but long on hustle, scored a season opening basketball victory over Fresno State, 75-67, In Bear Down Gym last night.

Trailing early in the game, the Wildcats finallÿ took command 16-15 midway through the first half and never again trailed the favored Bulldogs.

The Wildcats built up their margin and held a 39-32 half time lead before 2,820 fans, who stayed glued to their seats until the final 10 seconds of the ball game.

Leading Arizona to its opening victory was sophomore Warren Rustand, who bucketed 19 points, 13 of them in the first half. Close behind him was hustling Wes Flynn, one of the three seniors on the UA varsity, who had 16 points. Flynn, noted for his hustle, was dragging toward the end of the game as he continues to fight off the after-effects of valley fever.

For the Bulldogs, defending Çalifornia Collegiate Athietic Association champions, junior Tom Jacobsen led the attack with 19 points, picking up 16 of them in the first half. In the second half, with three fouls a against him, Jacobsen’s ball handling was curtailed and the Bulldogs' big scoring threat fouled out of the game with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Close behind Jacobsen was junior forward Tony Burr who scored 17 points 13 of them at the free throw circle. Burr was the big man on the backboards for the Bulldogs, picking off 14 rebounds.

The Wildcats' next home game is Monday night against nationally 10th ranked Wisconsin of the Big Ten who last night defeated the Air Force Academy 72-64.

In the preliminary game last night the University of Arizona freshman defeated Eastern Arizona Junior College 79-74. Harvey Fox led the Wildkittens with 18 points, while Joe Acker had 24 for Eastern Arizona.
