FLAGSTAFF, Jan. 9. (AP) — The Wildcats of the University of Arizona have opened their quest for a fifth consecutive Border conference basketball title in impressive fashion. They beat the Lumberjacks of Arizona State college 69-44, Saturday night.

This week the Arizona quintet has dates Wednesday with Texas Western and Saturday with New Mexico A&M. Both games will be at Tucson. On Jan. 10 they will travel to Tempe to meet the Sun Devils of Arizona State at Tempe.

Again it was Leon , all-conference forward, who paced the Wildcat scoring against the Lumberjacks. He dropped in 13 points as did big Vince Cisterna, center for the losers.

Paul Penner, Arizona center, found his scoring eye and hit the nets for 12 points. He went up time after time to tip in rebounds and had nine points to his credit at the end of the half.

Flagstaff held a brief 2-1 lead at the start of the game, but once the Wildcats pulled away, the Lumberjacks couldn't match their fast break.

Flagstaff couldn't be counted out of the contest, for time after time, the Jacks rallied forces for a comeback. Failure of Leonard Agee, Lumberjack forward, to hit with his usually dependable one handed side shots, hurt the home team's chances. Arizona also held Larry Baroldy, high scoring Flagstaff guard, to only three points.

In the preliminary game, the Arizona freshman Wildkittens defeated the Axbabes of Arizona State college at Flagstaff. 54-39. Bill Kemmerics. Arizona forward, paced his club with 26 points.
