CATS LOSE TO LOYOLA; FACE SANTA CLARA FIVE
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 30. (U.P.)—Johnny Arndt and Billy Donovan, a pair of pocket sized youngsters playing a big man's game, pulverized the University of Arizona with their long, looping push shots Saturday night to give Loyola university a surprising 61 to 54 victory. The win was one of the biggest upsets of the local cage season. Arizona had won 15 of 16 previous games and was rated a heavy choice to wallop the Lions, winners of only four, of 15 earlier games.
But the Arndt-Donovan combination peppered away with amazing shots all evening to provide the spark for the win. Arndt accounted for 26 points and his running mate, who like Arndt Is only 5 feet 9 inches tall, got 22.
Arndt's superlative first half play enabled Loyola to hold a 34 to 32 half time edge. The deadpan Lion ace made good on 8 of 17 shots from the floor in the first half.
The lead changed hands four times in the first 10 minutes of play. At one time Arizona held a 10 to 6 advantage, the largest lead it held at any point but midway in the half Donovan dropped in one of his long right hand push shots to break an 18 to 18 deadlock and except for a brief instant when the score was tied again Loyola led throughout the rest of tho game.
With seven minutes left in the first half, Loyola held a 27 to 21 lead. Arizona, however, with Forward Leon Blevlns and Center Paul Penner showing the way, cut the margin to 34 to 32 at the half.
Three minutes after the second half got under way, Blevins dropped in a 20-footer to tie the score at 35-35. But Arndt and Donovan again went to work and boosted the Lion lead to an uncatchable 54 to 40.
In the last eight minutes of play, Loyola concentrated on ball control, making little effort to increase their margin.
Arizona obviously was off its game. The Wildcats, who averaged 6 feet 3 inches as compared with the Loyola average of 5 feet 11 inches, were unable to control the backboards and the speedy Loyola quintet simply ran away from them.
The game was a remarkable clean affair although the last few minutes got considerable rougher as the Arizona boys tried desperately to get the ball.
