Davis hit 20 points and collected 11 rebounds for Arizona, which managed a 47-47 standoff on the boards against the much shorter Aggies. Hansen led a flurry which netted the Cats a 33-33 halftime tie and Brautigan put some enthusiasm into his team's desperate, but futile, late bid to catch State.

Arizona forced the Aggies into 17 offensive mistakes with its multiple defensive alignments, but New Mexico State's superior effort on the offensive boards (29-17) picked up 11 more field goal tries than the Wildcats could manage.

Fifty-five personal fouls and a pair of technicals — both against Arizona — were uncovered by officials Bob Korte and Ivan Rechy. Korte had one fan ejected from the premises after being hit in the chest by a bit of refuse.

Arizona led only once — when like Welton's layin at the start of the second half made it 35-33 — and the Aggies twice built 10-point leads in the closing minutes. Turner's efficient foul shooting provided the winning touch down the stretch, although the Cats moved to within three points, 62-59, 1:40 from the end.
